Leslie Butterfield: Volunteer Profile

Leslie Butterfield

After moving to Woodacre last year, I knew I wanted to become better connected with the Spirit Rock community, but I wasn’t quite sure how that would take shape. Because I was just starting out as a children’s mindfulness teacher, finances were tight and it was a stretch for me to attend most events at Spirit Rock. But when my dharma friend spoke to our small sangha about service as a form of dana, I felt moved to share the resources I did have — my energy, attention, and time. I’ve felt so grateful to become a part of the Spirit Rock community. From day one, my reception from staff and other volunteers has been one of warmth and genuine appreciation. Each day that I volunteer I’m greeted with a hug, sometimes a few hugs! I feel so lucky to be able to support the programs and retreats at Spirit Rock, if only in the smallest of ways, while also feeling supported and encouraged by those around me. The joy and excitement I feel each time I make my way across the valley to volunteer is a strong reminder that true dana comes from a place of happiness and abundance. My practice of dana these days feels like a continuous flow of gratitude and joy, cycling back and forth between me and those I get to work with at Spirit Rock.
